As often discussed before the new WoW Shadowlands expansion, the choice of pact is a very important and crucial decision. In the end, however, the developers have decided that you can change the pact more often and later even a catch-up mechanic takes effect if you are several weeks behind with the upgrades/fame.

Update 11/27/20: As announced in the official forums, a hotfix has been applied that fixed bugs when changing pacts. Players who switched pacts should now be able to complete more than just the first chapter of the campaign. Also, the 5 souls that were lost when switching pacts and are needed to upgrade the sanctum have been refunded.

This hotfix doesn't seem to have worked for all players, however. However, WoW's Game Director Ion Hazzikostas promised via Twitter that fixing this bug is currently top priority.

But already in the first ID after release errors occur when changing pacts. Whereby one cannot be sure at the moment whether the following complaints are really bugs or the system is supposed to work exactly like that.

Some players report that they can't work on progress for their new pact after the pact change, if the quest Listen who's hammering has not been completed before. These players are thus a week behind.

Some players have to struggle with a similar issue that does not let them perform further upgrades for the pact sanctum after the pact change.

Even for players for whom the change went smoothly, they will now unexpectedly be a week behind after all. This is because it was not until ID reset that it was discovered that the first Weekly Quest for the Pact does not start in this ID, but in the next one. This makes it much more difficult to get the souls needed for the Sanctum upgrade. If you have already invested souls in your old pact, you will be left out in the cold. Theoretically, souls can also be collected through world quests, but these world quests are rare and may not grant enough souls for an upgrade.

So choose your pact wisely. If you are still not sure which pact abilities are the best for your class, you can take a look at our overview Which pact for which class. For a big overview of all pact features check out the article The Pacts of Shadowlands.
