Last night, those responsible at Blizzard published the financial report for the fourth quarter of the 2019 fiscal year and drew a very positive conclusion. The reason: They were able to exceed the targets defined in advance and, for example, generate GAAP revenues of $1.99 billion (instead of $1.81 billion).

One reason for the positive results: the extremely successful Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The second reason: WoW Classic! Thanks to the vanilla relaunch, the number of subscribers has more than doubled since the end of the second quarter of 2019, according to the report. With Classic, it was possible to inspire former and new players for World of Warcraft (buy now € 14.99 ). It also shows the potential of "compelling, new content releases" when it comes to expanding the size of an existing community, it added. Going forward, the upcoming Classic content should continue to ensure a stable player base that is larger than it was in pre-Classic times. Of course, the release of the Shadowlands expansion will also contribute to this this year.

By the way, there were also some warm words for Overwatch: Thanks to the launch on Nintendo Switch, the community has now grown to over 50 million players worldwide. The Overwatch League is set to return in February with 20 teams. Hearthstone, on the other hand, saw an increase in active players compared to last quarter, which can be attributed to the release of the Heir to the Dragons expansion and the new Battlegrounds.
